Amateurs Win 2nd Annual Chattanooga Cup Matches 13 1/2 - 10 1/2
Since the birth of his son, Jackson, last January, Kevin Law has become more gentleman golfer than tournament golfer. Law, the former University of Tennessee player who has won the Tennessee Four-Ball with his father Ronnie and several area tournaments, including the Men’s Metro, played in just two events this golf season. Fatherhood clearly took center stage, and Law had no complaints. Still, when the amateur side in the Chattanooga Chapter Challenge Cup matches called Law and asked if he was willing to play, he didn’t have to ponder his decision. "I was glad Mike Jenkins called me," Law said. "I really wanted to play." It’s a good thing for the amateurs Law did play. He won three points for his team in the matches played at Chattanooga Golf and Country Club, including two on Monday as the amateurs won, 13 1/2-10 1/2. Law teamed with another former UT player, Andrew Black, to turn back Mike Bennett and Rich Balthrop in the morning foursomes match, 1-up, and then stormed past Black Creek’s Rob Riddle in the afternoon singles matches. "Match play isn’t something I really excel at," Law said. "Maybe because I play it so little. But it’s a lot of fun. I had a lot of fun [the last two days.]" Law had to work to get his points, though his final score in singles play didn’t reflect as much. Riddle took a 1-up lead into the back nine, but then Law rallied with wins on the next five holes. All it took were pars to win Nos. 10-13. A birdie at No. 14 sealed a 4 and 3 victory. "Rob ran into a little bit of trouble on those holes," Law said. "I was just glad I could make pars. It was a close match except for that little stretch of holes to start the back nine." Other heroes for the amateurs included Black, who won his singles match 4 and 2 over host professional Bruce Etter; Richard Keene, who defeated Balthrop 4 and 3 in singles play; and Neil Spitalny, who defeated Paul Helle, 8 and 6. Earlier in the day, Keene and Spitalny teamed to halve Mike Miller and Helle. The pros were led by Council Fire director of golf Hunt Gilliland, who won nearly a third of his team’s points. After a four-ball victory on Sunday, Gilliland teamed with Kevin Donnahoo for a 4 and 3 foursomes victory over Philip Guess and Greg Privette and then defeated Privette in singles, 4 and 3.
