Young Guns Show Off In CDGA Four-Ball Quarterfinals Saturday was a day for the young guys to strut their stuff in the quarterfinals of the CDGA Four-Ball Match Play action at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. UTC teammates Bryce Ledford and Thomas Smith rolled past veterans Randy Yoder and Todd Moreland, 6 and 5. Ledford is 20 and Smith is 21. "I think we brought knives to a gunfight,'' Moreland said. In another semifinal, Furman's Chris Gilliland and UTC's Tyson Elliott defeated Mike Jenkins and Tom Baird, 2 up. Gilliland is 20 and Elliott, who made his second career hole-in-one on No. 13 Saturday, is 19. "We shot a 64, and we're not going to The Honors on Sunday,'' Jenkins said. In the other semifinals, Joey Warwick and Mark Degler defeated Phil Bandy and Farrell Hayes, 1 up, and Tom Schreiner and Greg Privette beat Brad Palmer and Ben Vaughn, 5 and 3. Sunday's semifinal match-ups: Warwick-Degler (CGCC) vs. Gilliland-Elliott (Council Fire); Privette-Schreiner (Brainerd) vs. Ledford-Smith (Council Fire). The semifinals will begin at 8:30 a.m. at The Honors Course. The final is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. LEDFORD-SMITH COAST: The young guns took a 4 up lead on the front with Ledford making birdies on Nos. 3 and 7. "It's tough against these young players,'' Yoder said. "They are so good. We made a couple of mistakes on the front and they made none. Suddenly, we were 4 down at the turn.'' Smith made a 25-foot birdie on No. 10 and Ledford birdied No. 11 to send them to 6 up. They lost to a par on No. 12, and Ledford closed out the match with a birdie on No. 13. "The key to our success is we never birdie the same hole,'' Ledford said. Said Smith, "It's nice having Bryce as a partner.'' On Friday, Smith and Ledford each took a lesson in Atlanta from Danny Elkins, who also works with U.S. Amateur finalist Luke List. "We heard about him from Luke,'' Ledford said. "I hit it good today. The lesson really helped. "On Sunday, we have to play the hardest course in town. You can kind of spray it around out here. At The Honors, there is no room for error. We have to be patient and try to hit it straight.'' Said Smith, "I've struggled all summer, but I think working with Doug will help. I've just got to be patient.'' GILLILAND-ELLIOTT SHOOT 8-UNDER: The match against Jenkins and Baird was all square after 11 holes. Gilliland gave his team a 1 up advantage with a par at No. 12, and then Elliott made his hole-in-one at No. 13. "I hit a 9-iron about 135 yards,'' Elliott said. Jenkins and Baird made birdies at Nos. 15, 16 and 17. "And we still couldn't catch them,'' Jenkins said. "We made six birdies, and an eagle, but it wasn’t enough. We played them 1 up on the par 5s, and still didn't beat them. Of course, the hole-in-one was a back-breaker.'' Gilliland said Saturday's round was a special one. "It was the best we've ever played together,'' he said. "Not often do we play this well on the same team.'' Said Elliott, "We're excited about The Honors. It will be fun. It would be great to get a match between all the young guns.'' PRIVETTE-SCHREINER ROLL: "Greg was the man today,'' Schreiner said. "I just caddied and filled the divots.'' Privette made birdies at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to put his team 2 up. They went 3 up with a Privette birdie at No. 13. Both Schreiner and Privette birdied No. 14 and Privette closed out the match with another birdie at No. 15. "Tom makes pars and I make birdies,'' Privette said. "I played like I'm supposed to play today. I struggled my first match in this, but today I got things worked out. I made a few putts. It wasn't a career round, but it was good. "We look forward to the challenge of playing Bryce and Thomas. They are the younger generation and they hit it a long way. Still, it will be a fun time on a great golf course.'' UNDERDOGS STILL IN THE CHASE: Warwick and Degler have won three matches, 1 up, in the event. "We've been underdogs in every match,'' Warwick said. "We have no business being in the semifinals. We never expected this. He stinks, and I'm really bad.'' Warwick made birdies on Nos. 4, 7 and 14, but it was Degler who came up with a birdie on No. 17 to put his team 1 up. "I only show up at the end,'' Warwick said. "He's the laboring oar. That was a blast.'' Warwick and Degler beat Richard Keene and Jimmy Watkins in the second round. Keene and Watkins were 4 up at the turn at Black Creek, but Warwick and Degler shot a 29 on the back. (E-mail Stan Crawley at wscrawley@earthlink.net) ###
